Despite what the many critics believe, mainly football players and other athletes, cheerleading is a sport that requires hard work and dedication. Cheerleaders, just like participants in every other sport, attend camps, practice multiple times, risk injury, and face competition. It is time for cheerleaders to get the respect and recognition they deserve, instead of the stereotyping and ridicule they receive. During those last weeks of summer when all the sports teams are off at camp, one might assume that cheerleaders are just working on their tan. However, this could not be further from the truth. It is estimated that at least a half-million cheerleaders participate in cheerleading camps each summer (Brady, USA Today). Both football players and cheerleaders suffer through days of grueling practices during the off season, therefore both should receive praise. One comment that cheerleaders hear often is, "Cheerleading isn't a sport, you can't get hurt". However, cheerleading is just as dangerous as football. Another aspect of cheerleading that is ignored is the competition. Football players have their scrimmages, games, and play offs. Cheerleaders have competitions. A sports fan can turn on ESPN and watch a college football game, but they could just as easily turn on ESPN and see a cheerleading competition. Picture hundreds of girls, and some boys, all belonging to different squads, and all gathered to achieve one title, champions. Each squad struggles to be creative, and innovative with their moves; they strive for perfection and to stun the judges. If this does not qualify as competition, what does? There is also competition on the field during games. The squad for each team is competing against one another to be louder, look better, motivate the crowd, and perform more complex stunts; basically, each squad wants to show up their rivals. Additionally, just like football players learn cooperation and have to work together on the field if they want to win, cheerleaders have to learn unity.
