Think Before We Speak

A detailed Summary of Think Before We Speak

There is a saying, "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me." This saying means a person can hurt another person physically by punching or kicking him, but an individual will never hurt him physically with words. A truer way of saying it would be, "Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will really hurt me". This phrase emphasizes that verbal criticism hurts more than physical pain because it makes us feel that we're not valuable or we are not as good as others around us. There are so many people who have been hurt by others' dreadful words. I know this to be true because I have witnessed a person who committed suicide due to another's fearful words. I also know a girl who starved herself to death due to her mother's awful words and a guy who always regret for saying, "I hate you" to his mother. When someone jokes around by calling his friends fat or ugly, she'll never knows that the ones being teased take it very seriously. Sticks and stones will break our bones, but words will really hurt us because we start to believe that the words are true.

When I was a freshman at Santiago High School. I met a really friendly guy by the name of Tony, who was seventeen yea

rs old, and was teased by everyone. I felt really sad for him because I knew that he didn't have any close friend. I couldn't do anything because I fear that others will start to tease me, once I get close to Tony, like the way they teased Tony. That was the biggest mistake that I had made in my life. I wasn't really close with him, because most of my friends didn't like him. They, like others were making fun of him and saying bad things about the way he smelled. They called him "Garbage Boy" and "Smelly Boy?" because he rarely took a shower. Tony lived with his dad in a poverty home. His dad couldn't afford to pay for the bills, so, his house's water was shut off. I didn't really care much when people were telling me not to talk to him because I know it wasn't right for them to pre-judge Tony before they get to real know him. Tony hung himself in his backyard after some of the jocks in the school commented, "Why don't you just die garbage boy". Maybe Tony started to believe that he stunk and he didn't deserve to live. Tony would not have committed suicide if other kids hadn't been so mean to him with their words. Due to all the harsh words, Tony committed suicide because the words damaged him mentally. It made him feel that he didn't deserve to live because of what others said to him in school.

Five years ago, when I first moved to Garden Grove, I met a girl who was about my age, thirteen years old, named Mayra. She lived across from my house and we were very close friend. She was always there when I needed her and I was always there when she needed me. Mayra used to come over my house to me and tell stories of how her mom was always treating her so bad because Mayra was overweight. She weighed over one- hundred and forty pounds at the age of thirteen. She didn't chose to be that way, but due to her depression after her father died. Her mom had to wor
