A counter-culture of course has grown to pop-culture showing plus size models that are more understandable and believable than the women portrayed on most popular television shows. These plus size models gain much critical acclaim, however they cannot match up the thinner and ultimately more attractive models. Hence, society as a whole deems them as sort of revolutionaries, but not particularly attractive.

Magazines are filled with super models dangerously below the average weight of a young woman. The natural physique of an ideal woman has been twisted into an anorexic blond hair, blue eyed girl, thus leading girls to bleach their hair and wear contacts just to fit in. A girl will stand on a scale, complaining to herself about the one pound she has gained in the previous week. She will critically gaze at her body in the mirror in front of her, poking and prodding at the little baby fat on her stomach. She will begin to look at herself in hateful disgust. The age of girls worrying about their physical appearance is getting to be younger and younger while more and more skinny "perfect" models strut their bag of bones in girly magazines. Most people's bones do not normally stick out from all corners of their body, nor do most people's cheeks appear sunken and hollow. This can only be achieved through starvation. Many supermodels themselves have been known to joke around to the media about how their diets consist of only coffee and Marlboro Lights. What kind of message is this sending to our youth?

A majority of advertisements in media pop culture today casts a stereotype of women. Most domestic home products are always geared towards women. One would never see a man in a Tide Bleach commercial. Obviously advertisements create a standard of physical beauty that is unattainable for both men and women. Sadly, young women reaching adolescence are hit the hardest with subliminal messages. Until people realize that the physical appearances seen on television are completely out of anyone's reach, young men and women will continue to strive with a false sense of desire to be pretty. Pop culture has changed the mind set of most American teenagers. The burden of being perfect has been deeply implanted into each young female's mind.
