Government and Military, It could have been more.

Societies have developed a pattern over the centuries of creating a government system of communism. Choosing this selection of government has allowed military machines to be born and reflect the civilization that created them. Nowhere in history is this more evident than in the Greek city-state of Sparta. The entire lifestyle that revolved around the state of communism had the goal of creating the ultimate military machine. Sparta's government system contributed greatly to the strength of Sparta's army, the sheer power of which is best demonstrated during the Persian War. The great flaws of Sparta's society was that they chose their state of communism which resulted in their great power to impose their will on the rest of Greece, nor did they allow a strong culture to take root in Sparta, as was allowed to happen in Athens.

This was the one of the keys flaw in Spartan culture. They turned the Helots, people they conquered into a slave class, to a large degree. If this had been approached from a different angle, communist Sparta could have been the leader in Greece, not democratic Athens. Had the Spartans taken control of Messinia and them made them allies and not slaves, they could have taken their army out on a campaign and dominated and infested Greece with her state run ideas. The Romans did this, and they created an empire that only lasted for close to five centuries. Due to Sparta's firm cycle of communism, her educational system did not go far enough to create diplomats or administrators. She focused solely on creating warriors for her state.

Another possible solution to Sparta's inability to take its army on the road could have been to take the children of the Helots away from them and raise them in the Spartan tradition. This would not have offended their morality to much of an extent because they were already involved in selective breeding, in that they, "rejected unfit infants, encouraged the marriage of fine physical specimens, and expelled the cowardly and the idle"(21). This clearly demonstrates holding humans against their free will. Also, in a communist state, the elders are focused on military state affairs instead of focusing on serious issues such as when "young men went through a form of raping the girls of their choice"(Jones 35). This clearly demonstrates the harsh undemocratic reality of Sparta towards women. Sparta went to extremes to ensure the survival of her communist state in which the strongest and healthiest men would cohabitate with their choice of woman until their first child was born (35).

Finally, it is clear than that Sparta created a military society, for sound economic reasons, and which limited the progress of society, as a whole, could make in its cultural development. Physical training, and discipline were stressed in everything, particularly the schools, which to us would seem more like boot camp than school. The army created in Sparta was crucial in the defense of Greece at the time of the Persian invasion, but it was unable to impose its will of communist characteristics upon the Greek peninsula. The Helots, while an enslaved people, were still the only reason Sparta could not undertake a campaign of conquest. Being enslaved does not create a democratic society but the opposite.
