Richard the Second

Richard the second was born January 6, 1367. He was king of England from 1377-1399. He was son of Edward the black prince and grandson of king Edward the third. Richard took his grandfathers throne in June of 1377, he was not yet mature of old enough to run things so things continued to be run by the same nobles. John of gaunt(duke of Lancaster) ran things while Richard was young and for the last few years of Edwards reign. Gaunts misrule made the economy go down and the long conflict with France kept on going. This was king Richards first crisis even though he was not yet old enough to do much about it. The rebels against king Richard were pacified not long after they started and Richard got married in June of 1382. John of gaunt was able to keep peace with the French until he decided to flee to Spain in 1386 to persue personal things. Soon after he left Richards enemies started to take over. They created an 11-man team that would oversee all the kings activities for a year. When Richard tried to stop them the retaliated by having the parliament outlaw his closest friends and some were executed. In May of 1389 he announced he would ru


The war of the roses was a long time period in England where there were many conflicts and battles over who held the throne. They were never really called the war of the roses, the name just gradually came on throughout history with more discoveries about this time period. The start of this time period is not certain considering many different historians think it started at different times. Many think the start is when Henry the fifth took the throne of Richard the second in 1399. Other historians think the start came about in the 1450's, that's how wide this time period is. Many people view this as a period of civil wars because it had the ingredients to be one just not the effects of a civil war to be one. The towns were generally left alone and the commoners spared but many believe this was a period of civil war. There were three stages of the war, first it was the York's versus the Lancastrians which ended with Edward the fourth king and he was a York. Second was the yorkists versus the king makers and Edward won again only by luck. The third stage was thought to be Richard the third versus Henry the seventh which Henry came out vict
