Lee uses an uncommon style. The story is told by Scout Finch, although at the time of the story she was much younger. It's as if the whole story is a flashback. In the beginning, when she is describing the town, she says "Ladies bathed after their three o' clock naps and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum," (5). This is nothing like the often-crude statements of the young Scout. In one part of the story, she says "Anybody who went up to the house once oughta not to still run every time he passes it," (23) This shows how much scout had changed since the time of the story.
