To Kill a Mockingbird
The book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has won many awards. This is no surprise to those who have read the book, and many have. The book is popular for many reasons, one being that it is well written. Lee used different literary devices to bring the book together as a whole. Two of the most prominent devices used by Lee are symbol and round character. She also used a unique style when Scout was narrating which added greatly to the effect of the story. Towards the end of the book, when everything starts to tie together the reader realizes that symbolism is one of the main parts of the book. The mockingbird symbol actually applies to more than one character in the book. Lee uses an uncommon style. The story is told by Scout Finch, although at the time of the story she was much younger. It's as if the whole story is a flashback. In the beginning, when she is describing the town, she says "Ladies bathed after their three o' clock naps and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum," (5). This is nothing like the often-crude statements of the young Scout. In one part of the story, she says "Anybody who went up to the house once oughta not to still run every time he passes it," (23) This shows how much scout had changed since the time of the story.
