Taming of the Shrew
Shakespeare uses disguises to give characters the chance to act different from who they really are. This helps us to see that characters can be more than what they seem. Take Tranio for instance, he is the servant of Lucentio, they are friends and Lucentio trusts Tranio enough to give him his identity, after he sees Bianca and falls in love with her. So Tranio takes over Lucentio's identity, and you would not think that the servant turned master could act so well and make smart decisions that really helped Lucentio, but Tranio is able to do just that. He also grew quite bold in his portrayal of Lucentio because he stood up to his original master, Vincentio, and pretended he did not know him, which could really have gotten Vincentio into a lot of trouble had Lucentio and Bianca shown up. Another example of this would be Vincentio, the Pedant, claiming to be the father of Lucentio, Tranio. He almost got the real Vincentio in trouble with the local authorities because they began to cause a scene and the authorities were about to intervene when the true story came to light. This is just one of the many ways that Shakespeare used disguises in this play. There are two reasons why Shakespeare used disgu
This disguise is unsuccessful because Bianca does not marry Hortensio, instead she marries Lucentio. Shakespeare did this to show that in life you will always have competition and that nothing is ever free, you have to work to get what you want. This disguise works wonderfully until the real Vincentio shows up. Once the real father of Lucentio has arrived the disguise is unraveled and is forced to be given up. But it all works out in the end because the whole purpose was to trick Baptista into thinking that Lucentio, Tranio, was telling the truth about what Bianca would get from the wedding, which was true. This was accomplished and it ended up working out quite well, because it enabled Bianca and Lucentio to be married in secret. The third disguise that is introduced to us is Hortensio disguising himself as Litio. He chose to do this because it enabled him, like Lucentio, to pine for Bianca privately and to try to show her that he was the right man for her. He also did this because it allowed him to see Bianca without having Gremio around. The disguises Shakespeare used in the play help to add depth to the play. Shakespeare used four characters to take on a disguise, Tranio became Lucentio, Lucentio became Cambio, Hortensio became Litio, and the Pedant became Vincentio. By taking on these disguises these four characters are able to take on a whole new personality. These disguise
