The Odyssey
The Odyssey, written by Homer, is a book that tells the tale of one man's journey home. The main character of the book, Odysseus, has been lost at sea for several years, trying desperately to return home safely to his beloved son and wife. The book tells the tale of how Odysseus defeated the Cyclops and escaped the storms caused by the god, Poseidon; but no matter who or what he defeated he always seems to end up back at same place. The longer the gods postponed his journey, the more time was left for Odysseus's son to forget him. While Odysseus was busy trying to find his way home, his son and wife were left to ponder about his whereabouts and condition. In book one, Telemachus is approached by the goddess known as Athena. There are many ways that the reader might interpret this quote. To me, it seems as though Telemachus has little that he can remember about his father. If Odysseus has been lost at sea for almost ten years, Telemachus must have been very young when he left on his quest; therefore making it very hard for him to remember his father. While talking to Athena, Telemachus explains to her that, "... the whirlwinds have ripped him away, no fame for him! He's lost and gone now-out of sight, out of mind-and I ...He's left me tears and grief." (book one, line 280-2) By saying this, it seems that time has almost totally erased the memories he had of his father. Instead of fond memories, he is left with tears, sorrow, and little hope. Since you ask me, yes, they say I am his son." (lines 247-255, Fagles translation) Has ever really known who gave him life?
