Eva

A detailed Summary of Eva

"Eva"

In the short story "Eva," the author portrays the two male characters, the father and Stephen as being manipulated and seduced by Eva's sexuality.

The father and Stephen who are both subjected to Eva's sexuality are captivated by her. The father is smitten by Eva. He cares about her more than his own children. In other words, he neglects his children to keep Eva happy and satisfied. Usually a father of two children who have lost their mother , tries hard to focus more on the children and make sure all their needs are met. In the story, the father is so much manipulated by Eva that he has put the children in his second priority. He considers Eva as the glue who keeps his life all together. "I am going in to the village to buy Eva some soft drinks. She finds the lemonade too sour. The village is a good half and hour's walk away," the father says(2). These lines imply that the father will walk an hour just to buy Eva a soft drink and his own kids have to starve from hunger. In another part of the text, Stephen tells his father "I am hungry, when can we eat? When will supper be

ready? When Eva comes and only then. [His father replied]" (7). The fathe

of water. In other words, he remains proud and learns to control his desires and resist Eva's attempts of manipulating him.

There are proofs in the story revealing the fact that the farther sleeps with Eva. On one part of the story, Stephen mentions that "she would crawl in to bed with his father and they would whisper things he could never hear and then, after, he would hear the rhythmic movement of the bed springs, Eva's soft moans." These lines are a proof of the father's complete drowning in Eva's sexuality. The fact that despite his age and his two young children, he allows himself to sleep with his nephew, shows that he is absolutely captivated by her.

The story is a situation of two men that are being exposed to an attractive woman. One is the father who is blinded by Eva's sexuality and the other is Stephen who undergoes a difficult struggle, to resist Eva's powerful sexual attraction. The father symbolizes the male portion of our society that always lose control of their sexual desires and are manipulated by women. Stephen

symbolizes the other portion of men who are always strong in confronting women's sex appeal. They do not loose their moral values and therefore are not easily subjected to women's seduction.

r sacrifices everything, to make sure he could get what he wants from Eva. He

a person but he is seduced and influenced by her. The lines " He was inches away from her, starting, smelling her strong odor....,Goosebumps covered his body and he drew half of his torso on to the raft immersing part of it under water," is a proof that he does not love Eva but he is only mesmerized by her sexuality.
