Hyperbolic Performance, Judith Butler essay response

In the society we live in today there are many people that are attempting to fit into the standard norms. Everyday we are labeled with certain names that dictate the way you should be and how you relate and fit into the norms of society. When a certain individual is called this "name" they are made subject to the law. This naming call is formative, this calls you to perform the law in a certain way. This is a restraining way to live due to the fact that someone else has taken the liberty of naming you. In Judith Butler's essay she explores a possible way to separate yourself from the call given to you by the law of the culture. Butler calls this process of disassociating with this given name as "disarticulation". This is the process in which an individual performs certain actions to separate himself/herself from the assigned name.

There are unintentional consequences to the law that affect the individuals that either try to comply with the law or deviate from it. These unintentional consequences of the law are exceptions that some laws have. These consequences can greatly affect an individual. These exceptions are called hyperbolic; effects of the law that exceed the narrow intention of the law. A possible consequence that a person getting a breast augmentation is the possible medical side effects of these strictly aesthetic procedures. There can be many complications that may harm the person's health. This also applies to a person getting a nose job, or liposuction; there can be many complications that can affect a person's health in their pursuit of perfection.

Hyperbolic activity is the dramatization of the norm in order to become it. This is a form of rearticulating the norm.
