Our Tendency to War
The definition of war as stated by the Electric Law Library is a "contention by force; or the art of paralyzing the forces of an enemy." Inside of this definition there are all types of interpretations. There are private wars and public wars, local and national wars. National wars can be offensive or defensive. The descriptions could go on, and to the United States the definition is the same. Over the three hundred years history of this great country there have been nearly 50 serious wars or conflicts. Each war discussed in this paper can be broken down so that one can see the motivations or the necessity for the war. Even before the first ship of European settlers landed in America there was war. The group that we associate with being the first peoples to live in North and South America are the Native Americans. In all actuality they were not the first people to inhabit this land. There was a group of prehistoric people on this continent who were of earlier Mongolian descent. These early people were wiped out when the group of people known today as Native Americans came in and fought against and destroyed these people. Over the years the Native Americans migrated and split into many different tribes, some peaceful, o
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. 16 million Americans go off to fight. 400,000 of them are killed. Worldwide, 80 million people are killed in WWII. While Adolph Hitler was advancing throughout Europe the US finally stepped in. Together with the British the "axis of evil" was defeated. Adolph Hitler committed suicide. The US dropped the Atomic Bomb on Japan and that was then end of the war. The English and the Native Americans fought for many, many years. All of this country's early conflicts dealt with the Native Americans and the English settlers. The next eruption of war was the French and Indian war of 1754. England was fighting with France in America. The English settlers wanted control of the Americas, while the French also wanted control. Since everyone hated the British the French took alliance with some of the Native American tribes. In the end the British won and the opposing Native Americans were slaughtered and the French were pushed up out of American and into Northern Canada. In Europe wars were rampant, some lasting for incredible amounts of time. Most of these wars were involved somehow with England. England, with the monarch at its most powerful, had colonies everywhere. It had colonies in Australia, South Africa, Russia, China, and just about everywhere else that they could reach by land or sea. They then found out about the Americas, and not wanting to lose anything to another country they set out for the new continent. Upon their arrival, they find that the country was already inhabited by a "savage people" who are "violent, and utterly uncivilized." The fighting began. England wanted the land at any cost, but the settlers were not prepared for the different Native American people. The culture shock experienced for both the English Settlers and the Native Americans was great. Some Native American tribes helped the English settlers, while some killed the settlers.
