A detailed Summary of Manifest Destiny


Between the years of 1840 and 1890 America expanded westward. During the expansion, America took up the ideas of the "Manifest Destiny". America expanded towards the west where there were many positive and negative factors that played a role in this progress. Another big factor was Americas Natural Environment.

The Manifest Destiny was a belief that America was destined to expand its boundaries to the Pacific Ocean. Document H shows the theories behind the Manifest Destiny were indeed true. It shows how many lives were affected once the settlers moved west. The Native Americans had a big change in their lifestyle as the people moved. Many of the settlers tried to force their religion and way of living on the Native Americans, something completely different from what they had been used to. It was very hard for the Native Americans to go about their way and be free like they wanted be


The Natural Environment was also very important. Document A shows many good benefits west of the Mississippi river. West of the Mississippi were a lot of grasslands that would make it very easy to travel, and farm, etc. America was able to gain this territory very easy with the help of the Homestead Act. The Homestead Act allowed the settlers to acquire up to 160 acres of Public land, as long as they had resided in that area for at least five years. This law played a very big role in bringing many settelers to the west.

There were many things that helped to the decision of expanding westwards, and there were also others that didn't help as much. After all the natural environment appealed to many and didn't make it a hard decision to get what they wanted.
