First Drive

Everybody loves to drive, right? I couldn't wait to get behind the wheel. I was finally old enough to get my learners permit. I had been studying very hard for my permit test for about two weeks, and my parents agreed that I was ready to drive. Well, my dad thought I was ready anyway. My mom wasn't too thrilled about the idea.

Nevertheless, my dad and I set off for the Delta County Courthouse later that day. Riding to Delta never took longer. I started to get nervous. I wondered if I would be able to drive home. After thinking about it for a while, I dismissed the idea that my dad would let me drive home. "He couldn't be that crazy!" I laughed to myself. We finally pulled up to the courthouse. We climbed out of my dad's pickup and headed in. My heart was starting to pound. I couldn't figure out why I was so nervous, and I tried to convince myself that it wasn't that big of a deal. We wandered around the courthouse until we finally found the right office. I went up to the counter and told the lady I wanted to get my learners permit. "Okay." she said in a shrewd voice. "First I need to see your birth certificate." I then realized that I had totally forgotten about a birth certificate. Oh crap! How could I have forgotten that? I l

On the drive back to our house, I tried to convince my dad that it never said we needed to bring a birth certificate in the handout we had gotten a couple of weeks ago. I must not have read the handout very well, because my dad found it in there himself. I thought my dad was just going to forget the whole thing for that day, but I was surprised when my dad told me we were going back down there that day. I started to get that same nervous feeling that I had earlier that day. Once we got back, my mom somehow managed to dig out my birth certificate out of a ton of papers she had stashed somewhere. We once again headed off to get my permit.

This time the drive over there seemed even longer than the previous one. I think I would have been a lot better off if I would have gotten my permit the first time. Waiting all that time just made me think about it too much. I nervously flipped through my driver's booklet for the last time. "This stuff is easy, I know I'll pass it." I told my dad. "Just keep studying, you still have a lot to learn." was his reply. I didn't really think that I had anything to learn, I probably should have listened to him. My thoughts were interrupted by the halt of our pickup. We had arrived at the courthouse once again. As we walked back to that same office, I hoped things would go a little smoother this time.

We headed out of the courthouse and out towards the parking lot. On the way out my dad asked me how many questions I had missed on the test. I told him. "Geez! How'd you miss that many!?" he asked.. I just shrugged and said, "I was just nervous I guess." As we walked up to my dad's pickup, I automatically headed for the passenger's door. "Just what do you think you are doing?" asked my dad. "Um... getting in." I replied. He handed me the keys and said, "No, your going to drive." This gave me mixed emotions. I really wanted drive, but at the same time I was really nervous and wasn't sure if I was ready. I suggested that maybe I should start out on some of the back roads first. "Just get in!" was my dad's reply to that suggestion. "The only way your going to learn to do anything is just to jump right into it."
