Men's Conversation Vs. Women's Conversation
Women and men are completely different in many ways. Men are mostly figured as "strong," while woman are "weak." Besides the biological difference, which is the most distinct one, men and women are also unlike in lots of things, such as style, behavior, language, and social life. The difference in language is somehow astonishing for most of the people who don't really take notice of the linguistic development. In fact, the dissimilarity in sexist language has been an important occurrence in linguistic problems. "As women derive from man in the biblical story of creation, women's words or anything linguistically associated with women, can be seen as derivative of, and by implication inferior of, the masculine equivalent" (Baron 154). Many studies discover that not every conversation by a pair of man and woman always goes smooth. Those conversations often encounter some misinterpretation that is caused by gender based language inequities. The same sentence said by a man does not always have the same meaning and purpose as the same sentence said by a female. English is one of the languages that are struggling with this gender-based language problem. Worse, this disparity in sexist language is directly leading to gender discriminati
The gender based language problem has been a significant thing in our lives. I would say that gender based language or sexist language is bad because it causes discrimination among woman. Even many linguists have been trying to resolve this problem again and again. I believe that there is no way for us to eliminate this problem completely. The most we can do is to reduce the use of gender based language as much as possible. Raising awareness among English speaker is the best effort to reduce the gender language problem. By increasing awareness, a person can always be aware of what we are saying, which also means that we will be always aware of saying words or sentences containing sexist language. In order to do this, it would take a long period. If we keep promoting the use of non-gender language, we can remove the problem easily. Jacobson, Carolyn. "Some Notes on Gender-Neutral Language." Non Sexist Language. 26 Oct. 1999. Stetson University. 21 March 2001. The difference of men and women in language is not located only in the habits, characteristics of communicating, or communication topics, but also in grammar, word choice and pronoun. In English, word choosing somehow widens the meaning towards man, but it narrowed the meaning towards women. The word "man" is a simple example which I have already used since the beginning of this project. The word "man" was a generic word that refers to all humans, men and women. But this word's meaning is narrowed that it now refers to adult male human beings. In this case, the word's meaning widen towards male, but it narrows towards women. There are lots of other words that have the similar problem as the word "man." Klein, Jennifer. "Alternatives to Sexist Language."19 Dec 2000. Hamilton University. 22 March 2001. In a conversation with a man, a woman typically listens. While men do most of the talking. In other word, a man mostly dominates a conversation done by a pair of opposite sexes. A Man has a tendency to keep talking while whereas, woman tries to keep listening to man's talking. Women sometimes tend to stop in the middle of the conversation because they do not know what they are going to say next. "[W]omen much more often than men break off without finishing their sentences, because they start talking without having thought out what they are going to say" (Pfeiffer 280). This sentence describes exactly how women often stop in the middle of the conversation without going any further. Weatherall, Ann. "Women and Men in Language." Human Communication Research. Dec.1998: 275-293. Men and women are also different in conversation topic. But sexist language appears regardless from the differences of topics. Men's topics in conversation is mostly around sports, automotive things, bu
