Euripides' Medea and Morrison's Beloved are related to two mothers one of whom murdered their children (Medea) and another one who was responsible for their deaths (Sethe). Her past let her hard and dreadful memories that signed her life and made her psychologically and emotionally unstable.

Morisson's Beloved explores the physical, emotional, and spiritual devastation created by slavery, a devastation that continues to haunt those characters who are former slaves even in freedom. According to the sparknotes, "the most dangerous of slavery's effects is its negative impact on the former slaves' senses of self, and the novel contains multiple examples of self-alienation" (literature). The main example of these effects is the appearance and character and behavior of Sethe in the plot that reveals her psychological condition and cruel actions.
