Colin Powell

The True American Hero

In an urban area of New York a boy was born into the world.

This boy was to face many feats and conquer them like no other. Unknown

at the time, this child born to Jamaican immigrants was to change the nation,

and although unexpected, a young black boy, was to grow up to be one of

America's greatest military leaders and citizens, despite all the odds.

In the early nineteen twenties, two Jamaican immigrants came to America. Their names were Luther Theopolis Powell and the

former Maud Ariel Mckoy. Although coming over to America separately, they shared a common dream. This dream was to get a good job and start a family in the promised land. This couple met in a park in New York city by chance and fell in love at first site. They soon married and settled in Harlem which then was a thriving black community. But by five years later, this once prosperous town had degraded to nothing but a ghetto. It was into this that Colin Luther Power was born in 1937. Three years later Powell's family decided it was time to move. They talk Powell who was three, and his sister Marilyn who was eight, and moved to the Bronx.

Though it would be unknown today, Powell struggled in his early years.


going on in the world. He started "America's Promise" which is a promise to promote teen awareness. Unlike any other, Powell has gone to the people instead of the people going to him. And just that attitude is what has made him so successful. Some of his awards include, the President's Citizen medal, the Presidential medal of freedom, the soldier's medal, the Air medal, and the Bronze star just to name a few.
