Carl Sandburg, born January 6, 1878 in Galesburg, Illinois (Griffith 108).
Sandburg's parents August and Clara Anderson Sandburg were Swedish immigrants who came from Sweden in 1875. In Galesburg Carl only completed eight years of education before dropping out at the age of eleven. Sandburg then spent almost a decade working odd jobs and traveling as a hobo. During this time writing greatly influenced his life. When the Spanish-American war broke out Sandburg traveled to Puerto Rico for volunteer work. In 1898 at the age of twenty Sandburg entered Lombard College (Barr 1). At Lombard College Sandburg was such an excellent writer he was named editor of the college newspaper. Sandburg was not only the editor of the newspaper, but he also became captain of Lombard's College basketball team (Anderson 129). He never even married or had any kids. In 1939 Sandburg composed a six volume biography on Abraham Lincoln (Anderson 129). In 1940 volume 4 Abraham Lincoln: The War Years won a Pulitzer Prize. "Chicago" perhaps Sandburg's greatest work was written in 1940 (Allen 213). In this poem there is definite evidence that Walt Whitman influenced Sandburg. In 1945 the Sandburgs moved with their herd of prize-winning goats and thousands of books to Flat Rock, North Carolina. Sandburg's Complete Poems won him a second Pulitzer Prize in 1951.
