A detailed Summary of Lord of the Flies vs Merchant of Venice


William Golding and William Shakespeare created the same character, despite the obvious time, setting, and theme differences. Jack Merridew and Shylock are alike in many ways. They are both cold hearted, cruel, and vicious, thereby illuminating the theme of man's inhumanity toward others.

Shylock the Jew, and the lead choirboy Jack are exceptionally similar characters. Shylock did everything within his power in order to see Antonio die,

he refused to compromise in any way. Jack did whatever it took to kill Ralph, from chasing him through the jungle, to burning down the entire island. However, in both the stories, the cruel individuals fail to bring much harm to those they despise. Ralph escaped Jack, was found by an English officer, and was rescued


Both Jack and Shylock 'fell from grace' during their rain of terror. Jack had it all on top his Castle Rock. He was King. He had undying power over his tribe, and used it to hurt as many as he could. Unfortunately for him, when Ralph was running for his life, an English officer, who had seen the smoke coming off of the burning island and come to help, found him. Putting an abrupt end to Jacks dreamland, as well as Ralph's nightmare. A very similar situation was when Shylock was in the courtroom in Venice preparing to cut a pound of flesh from Antonio's body.
