Crucible essay

Hundreds of years ago, there was a reverend named Samuel Parris. He had one daughter named Betty, and a niece named Abigail. Since Salem was a theocracy at the time, Rev. Parris was the head of the church and town. But due to his actions and lack of authority, many people were wrongly executed during the Salem Witch Trial in 1692. In 1953, a man named Arthur Miller decided to write a play based on this story. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller illustrates themes such as: guilt, hypocrisy, and revenge.

Guilt, a word that means: a feeling of remorse for a real or imagined wrongdoing. Most, if not all, people have felt this way one time or other. For example, in The Crucible, John Proctor feels guilty because of the affair he has


The last theme is revenge. Throughout this play it will become apparent that many people do not like each other and many are plotting against each other. Many for land, others, have their own reasons for revenge. Like during the entire story, Abigail is trying to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor for firing her, and to be with John again. Mr. Wolcott blames the death of his pig on Goody Corey, for supposedly selling him a bad pig. Goody Putnam, who lost seven children in childbirth, says Goody Nurse sent her ghost out on her children and killed them.
