Worship

Does God call us to worship Him because He needs our worship? This is the question that runs through many people's minds when going to worship at church. Does God command us to worship Him because His ego needs a boost? No! Worship was created not for His benefit, but for our benefit. The particular church that I visited was the Bethany Chapel, which is an Evangelical church located on 3333 Richardson Way SW. We were greeted at the entrance and were directed to see Mark Simpson who is a Youth Junior High Pastor at Bethany Chapel. When asking him a few questions about worshipping and why people come everyday to worship at the Bethany Chapel he stated that "worship involves three things, which is listening, applying, and the challenge." When it comes to worship, listening to the Pastor relate a passage from the bible to current events that are happening in the world today, it's in applying that passage when you leave the church to the daily things we do in life. The challenge comes in understanding the passage and trying to indulge it into our life whether it improves relationships or just makes us closer or in tune with God. After observing the worship celebration on Sunday November 10, 2002 it showed me how true worship must be mo

A major ritual or even that takes place in a Protestant church is two things. One is Baptism, and the other Eucharist. Baptism is a symbol of cleansing, forgiveness of original sin permanently, and makes all Christians share in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It makes them one with God. The sacrament of the Eucharist is a memory of Christ's death and a confession of faith. Through the Eucharist the community is united to God and one another. The sacred place for this community is Bethany Chapel; sacred time is 10:45 am every Sunday, sacred artifact includes the cross, sacred ritual of the Eucharist, sacred roles include the Pastor, sacred scripture would be the bible. A genuine encounter with God in worship requires members of the Bethany Chapel to fulfill these sacred dimensions. There is a part of them that needs to be filled up, to be comforted, to be overwhelmed with wonder, and to be lifted up in exhilaration of praise. Worship encompasses much more than the activities of the gatherings on Sundays. True worship touches the emotions of the heart and engages the mind, admittedly not every individual always feel like worship. It is at those times that worship is more a decision of the will of an individual rather than the desire of the heart.
