Othello vs. Robert Ross
For kids, jobs are all based on money, fame or just being recognized. We all want to be the big man, the most popular or just well respected. We see people on television or read about them in books and sometimes we dream about being that person and think we can handle it. When we, as humans, grow up, tend to know what we want to be and who we want to be, but we never really think about the truth about ourselves. A simple incident can change who we think we are. This is evident through Robert Ross and Othello. They think they know what they want but then change view in their own ways. Things change as we grow up and what we thought was good at that time, doesn't always stay that way. Robert Ross was the main character in the novel "The Wars" by Timothy Findley. He was like many boys, wanting to become a war hero when he grew up. He had such faith in senior officers, in the ideals of glory and heroism and patriotism. He wanted to be all that. In the case of Robert Ross, he found out that maybe war wasn't his thing. Maybe he just wasn't cut out for the consequences and burdens. He realizes this on the first time that he killed a senior official called Eugene Taffle. He realizes that he has a love for animals and his ethics return to him and take priority over military obedience when he tries to rescue horses from the cruelties of war. All he wanted to be was a war hero and now he is defying the military to do what is really meaningful to him. Robert disobeys Leather's orders and tries to free some horses from the barn that is threatened by falling shells. Unfortunately, the horses die before he can save them all and he is filled with anger, shooting captain Leather between the eyes for causing their death. From this moment on, you see him rebel against anyone who does not respect his love for animals. This rebellion continues when he barricades himself in the barn with the horses and shouts, "We shall not be taken"(pg.212). It is Robert's strong connection with the horses that leads to his downfall, because "we" implies that he has an accomplice and for that, the attack is ordered. Robert burns in the barn with the horses, feeling the same fear and anguish as they do. The experiences that Robert shares with the horses contribute to his sense of empathy and compassion for animals, and his realization that the path he once thought was his has changed.
