The Great Gatsby

There are several colors used for symbolism in the novel, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The following five colors: green, white, blue, gray and yellow are just a few that Fitzgerald uses cleverly for symbolism.

The first color green is used the most in the novel, The Great Gatsby. The reason for this may be that green is the color used to describe the main character Jay Gatsby. It symbolizes envy, money and Gatsby’s unreachable dream; which is Daisy.

Gatsby is an envious man for a few reasons. One is that he is extremely envious of Tom Buchanan because he has the one thing he can not buy and it is Daisy. Also, Gatsby is always envious of the people that he invites to his house. He knows that he is not “inherited (old) money”{p.95} like the people he invites to his parties. This makes him a man “green with envy” {p.67}

In the same way, green is used to symbolize money! In the novel, money controls the lives of the people. Gatsby feels he needs money to live and to impress Daisy. Symbols of Gatsby’s money include his large green lawn and the green ivy growing up his house. Also, his car represents the passengers sitting “in a sort of green leather conservatory.” {p.68} All of
