The first color green is used the most in the novel, The Great Gatsby. The reason for this may be that green is the color used to describe the main character Jay Gatsby. It symbolizes envy, money and Gatsby's unreachable dream; which is Daisy.

Gatsby is an envious man for a few reasons. One is that he is extremely envious of Tom Buchanan because he has the one thing he can not buy and it is Daisy. Also, Gatsby is always envious of the people that he invites to his house. He knows that he is not "inherited (old) money"{p.95} like the people he invites to his parties. This makes him a man "green with envy" {p.67}

In the same way, green is used to symbolize money! In the novel, money controls the lives of the people. Gatsby feels he needs money to live and to impress Daisy. Symbols of Gatsby's money include his large green lawn and the green ivy growing up his house. Also, his car represents the passengers sitting "in a sort of green leather conservatory." {p.68} All of

Tom's car being blue may even represent the relationship between he and Daisy, {being unhappy} based on money, not love.

Another example of yellow is the scene just before Gatsby enters the pool, "He shook his head and in a moment disappeared among the yellowing trees" {p.169} This shows that he was about to die just as the leaves in the trees were.

The second color white symbolizes beauty, cleanliness, wealth, innocence and also laziness. This color symbolizes Daisy as the unreachable "enchanted princess" who becomes Gatsby's dream.{p.25} To Gatsby, Daisy represents innocence, however, Fitzgerald uses different shades of white to cover her corruption. Daisy is described as "dressed in white," she powders her face white, and she mentions her "white girlhood". {p.117} Gatsby describes Daisy as "high in a white palace, the king's daughter, the golden girl". {p.117} His dream girl from the past.

Fitzgerald uses the fourth color gray to describe the "Valley of Ashes" as "a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque garden, where ashes take the farms of houses and chimneys.... And ash-gray men swarm up with leader spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud ". {p.27} The Wilson's garage is covered with ashes because he is of such low class.
