It’s Pride vs. Gridlock as City Looks to OlympicsNew York was selected as America’s entry in the global competition to hold the 2012 Summer Olympics, and the selection was greeted with pride and joy from city and state officials, the town’s movers and shakers, and ordinary people taking a stroll in the park. Many New Yorkers expected the selection to bring huge revenues from tourists, a boom for business in the city, and thousands of new jobs to construct the necessary facilities. New transportation lines, new housing in a big Olympic village in Queens at the end of the Olympics, and momentum for a city recovering from the September 11th terrorist attacks. It is impossible to bring an Olympics to New York that would bring tons of money without experiencing traffic. As James Molinaro, the Staten Island borough president, quoted “Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.” Basically he is saying that traffic tie-ups and other inconveniences would be well worth the trouble.
