NYC Olympics 2012
It's Pride vs. Gridlock as City Looks to OlympicsNew York was selected as America's entry in the global competition to hold the 2012 Summer Olympics, and the selection was greeted with pride and joy from city and state officials, the town's movers and shakers, and ordinary people taking a stroll in the park. Many New Yorkers expected the selection to bring huge revenues from tourists, a boom for business in the city, and thousands of new jobs to construct the necessary facilities. New transportation lines, new housing in a big Olympic village in Queens at the end of the Olympics, and momentum for a city recovering from the September 11th terrorist attacks. I believe that New York City hosting the Olympics in 2012 would be an excellent idea and have the pros far outweigh the cons. I see past the small inconveniences like traffic and prices, and look at the larger impact of the Olympics. The government has plenty of money to pump into this project to get many people working again and getting the economy soaring again. The business and construction would bring about a much more beautiful and even more attractive city than ever before. The New York Jets need a new stadium anyway, so constructing a new facility for the Olympics only to be handover to the Jets when Olympic events are over would be very convenient. The summer games in our area would not only be exciting but would also inspire many young New Yorkers to go for the gold. The strongest opposition to New York having the summer games came from residents of Manhattan's West Side, where a two billion dollar stadium would be built. They complained that the projects would destroy neighborhoods by displacing families and small businesses.
