Why do people make things sound much better than it really is? Why do they have to look into the past for happiness? For Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie and Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman, they are not satisfied to the point where they have "rose-colored" memories of the past. People sometime look in the past to where they have their "happiest" memory of life. They look to it because their present situation is not what they want it to be. Why can't they just learn to deal with what they have and be happy with it? Surely enough, everybody is different and has their own personality.

In Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman was the type of person who almost everyone either looked down on or felt sorry for. Through out his life he dreams about how his children, mainly Biff, will be a big success, but that never happened. Willy believes that the more popular y


ou are the more successful you will be. He believes that money equals security and that will solve all of your problems. He wants everyone to like him. Willy doesn't want to face the reality of his life, consequently, he lies to himself.

In The Glass Menagerie, Amanda Wingfield is the southern belle that seems to be drying out like a rose. Her glory days are over. She keeps talking about her past and telling her children that she was the most popular girl in Blue Mountain. She keeps bringing up the seventeen gentlemen callers that she always had over. She wants her glory days to be the present but knows that it will never happen so she needs to recall the past. Amanda could just be adding a little more "red coloring" to her perfect rose-colored memory, but who really knows the truth in her case.
