Fitzgerald uses a satirical and serious tone to set up the conflict that dominates the entire novel: an idealistic dream vs. the realities of the world. Throughout Gatsby the point of view is seen only through Nick, which makes it difficult for the reader to understand many situations such as Daisy and Gatsby's relationship.
