God - Given Skill An artist is a person skilled in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others ("artist" Webster's New World Dictionary). People associate artist with painters, sculptures, and drawers. Many artists recognize their gift at early ages. Although, many artist use their skill to show their cultures and feelings, the word artist, when heard people think Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, or Cassett. When people hear Black American Artist, they think of people who do African Art. However, many Black American Artists specialize in many other things other than African Art. Faith Ringgold, Jean Michel Basquait, William Tolliver, Jeremy, Maurice, and Robert Love, Kathleen Wilson, Charles Bibbs, Renee Cox and Paul Goodnight are famous Black Artists who have shaped the world of art for many up comings. An overnight success, born in Brooklyn, New York, Jean Michel Basquait lit the torch for many black artists. Like other artists before him, Basquait started his work as a teenager. Later William Tolliver, took the torch and ran with it, perfecting his skill more than 38 years of his life as an artist. William began painting when he was about seven. William's mother conducted art contests between herself, William and his brother. In 1991, Tolliver opened a gallery in the district of Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia. He never received any formal training however, Tolliver attests to reading more than 4,000 books on different subjects, but mostly on art his thirst for the subject was unquenchable (www. William Tolliver. com). William Tolliver being a young artist learned the technology of color blending. He educated himself by studying the classics: Chagall, Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso (www. William Tolliver.com). At the age of 13, Tolliver discovered that his style of painting resembled the style of Picasso. The style of the avid appreciator Picasso called Cubism. The art of Cubism was to draw or paint using geometric shapes. "Art demands a response, whether it's good or bad that is the objective of the artist". - William Tolliver. In all of those areas, he demonstrated the God given talent that he discovered early in life. Then Paul Goodnight, another famous black artist who like Basquait carried the torch down the hall of success. Goodnight has developed his unique aesthetic philosophy to document the humanity of people around the world. Paul Goodnight often incorporates African themes and symbols to provide depths of history and culture. He has studied and traveled extensively to different parts of the world, living among the people of Russia, China, Hati, Nicaragua, African, and Brazil (Paul Goodnight's Welcome to my World of Color pg.46). Paul Goodnight is famous mostly for his painting of many African themes.
