Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born to the talented musician Leopald Mozart on January 27th, 1756 in Salzburg, Austria. He demonstrated a rich talent early in his life, practicing the harpsichord at the age of three. His older sister is quoted saying that the young Mozart "often spent much time at the clavier, picking out thirds, which he was always striking, and his pleasure showed that it sounded good."1 This suggests an innate talent, which was then cultivated by Mozart's musical family and turned into a masterpiece. However, Mozart later claims; "People make a mistake who think that my art has come easily to me. Nobody has devoted so much time and thought to composition as I. There is not a famous master whose music I have not studied over and over. "2Mozart's early talent did not stop at practicing, although it only took him thirty minutes to master his first composition, 3 days before his fifth birthday. Shortly thereafter Mozart composed his first work, Andante in C minor. Leopald realized that both he and his sister demonstrated a great deal of musical talent. He devised a plan to not only cultivate his children's talents more, but profit off of their forte. Very shortly, they began visiting the courts of Europe.
The opera moves around a whimsical plot line full of imaginary characters, a princess, a queen, and even incorporation of his fraternity into the story line. The result is a play that can be read into and enjoyed by anyone who witnesses its performance. Mozart's creativity in devising such a frolicsome plot stems back to his youth when he would travel on tours. His sister is quoted: "He would think out a kingdom for himself as we traveled from one place to another, and this he called the Kingdom of Back [das Konigreich Rucken] -why this name, I can no longer recall. This kingdom and its inhabitants were endowed with everything that could make them good and happy children. He was the king of this land-and this notion became so rooted within him, and he carried it so far, that our servant, who could draw a little, had to make a chart of it, and he would dictate the names of the cities, market towns, and villages to him." 10
