There are many definitions of good and evil in this world as there are people. Some see evil as the unknown, some Catholics may view evil as pure sin, while others may think evil is the changing of one's destiny for any unethical purpose. To the good, those who take a side against them, thus being the opposing force is evil. On contrary, to the evil, if the good has intentions opposite from theirs, then is it they themselves that aren't evil. In Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima, an adolescent, Tony seeks the true meaning what good is, and what evil is.

A few have given their ideas to Tony of what good and evil is. They include Tony's father, the Priest and the family's midwife and curendura, Ultima. Tony's father believes evil is what man does not understand nor believe in; man sees the unknown as evil. Priests of the church have slightly brainwashed Tony making him believe that sin is pure evil. Non-believer, fellow friend, and one who endured the pain of great misfortune, Florence, put more confusion on Tony from his own beliefs. Ultima believes evil is the changing of one's fate, thus "playing god".

The church altered Tony's thinking, saying that evil is pure sin. Sin is doing anything against the will of God; sin is wrongdoing, anything that isn't right. To define sin, written commandments exist, stating what should and shouldn't be done. Sin, to the townspeople is what the priests say sin is. The church influences the townspeople by convincing them not to sin, for sin is evil.

Tony never quite found out what neither good, nor evil was. He was told what they were from different aspects but that only brought him confusion. A lot of things Tony did not understand, yet he didn't misperceive anything, namely misjudging anything as being evil. As stated above, between good and evil, the opposing forces see each other as the evil, (the good see the other side as the evil, whereas the so-called evil see the good as the evil.) One can define in their own words what good and evil are, but there may never be a true meaning in this world for them. Tony never found out the true meaning of what good is, and what evil is. One can define these terms yet a true definition may never be reached.
