Aids

A mysterious epidemic spread throughout the country in a matter of years. A virus unknown to mankind, leaving a brutal vestige, killing millions of people. Researchers at first were not aware of the dangers this virus had on the people of the world. The virus known as AIDS, has become the deadliest virus in the world. Many people do not understand or know what the AIDS virus is. Understanding, learning, and talking about AIDS gives people knowledge of what the virus is and does. "AIDS is the most serious communicable disease epidemic in contemporary times, and the effort to reduce its spread is the U.S. government's top health priority", stated Harlon L. Dalton in his book AIDS And The Law.

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Acquired meaning something one can get or obtain. Immune meaning safe or protected. Deficiency meaning a lack or shortage of something, and Syndrome meaning a group of symptoms or problems. In other words, a disease one can contract that attacks the immune system. As Hancock and Carim stated in Aids the Deadly Epidemic,

Research and time would bring truth to this myth. Although, there are many clues to where the first cases of AIDS originated, researchers cannot be sure where the original strand came from. AIDS. COM Inc. reported the total number of people living with AIDS globally as of June 1999 was 34.3 million. There have been millions who have died before and after this report and there will be many more added to the number of people living and dying with AIDS.

When Johnny was first diagnosed with AIDS he was afraid of what his family and friends would think of him. He did not know where to turn or what to do. Informing Johnny's family and friends would not be easy, and shock would be the first thing that happens when they are informed. People who are first informed of their disease have a fear of embarrassment and rejection when they consider telling their family and friends. However, if family and friends are properly introduced to and informed of the disease, then they can cope a little better. It will not be easy, but help is available. There are a wide variety of groups willing and able to help people inform their families of this disease.

Finding a cure for AIDS will be a long and arduous task. Being infected with AIDS is hard but help is offered for all who want it. Maybe one day there will be a cure for AIDS and it won't affect people anymore.
