Interior Design

Interior Design is a career that has interested me for years. Since I was a little girl, I have rearranged furniture and pictures in an effort to be creative and make our home look more beautiful. I seem to have always possessed a creative talent for design. Interior design in America with its rich European history and variety of modern trends provides both advantages and limitations as my chosen career.

Eighteenth Century France was characterized by a classic approach to architecture. The structure of the buildings were palaces. The usage of statues was extremely popular also during this period in France. Paris, the city of lights, was known for its use of both white cement structures such as columns and interior wall sculptures. Robert de Cotte, Jacpues Jules Gabriel, and Ange - Jaques Gabriel were famous designers of the time (Ball 39). These men mark the progression in the "batiments" through the reign of Louis XV; the younger Gabriel bridges to Louis the XVI (39).

From the latter part of the Sun King's reign, there was little building in the royal domain: new work was confined to interiors. This allowed the prominent architects time and freedom to work with other customers. De Cotte and another crown architect, Gabriel

In an interview with Karen Gamble from Brooks Interior Design, she told me a little bit about their client Horace Grant from the Orlando Magic. At this time they are in the process of building a multimillion dollar house for Grant in Winter Park that she and the company's owner helped in designing. Once the building of the house is finished, Brooks Interior Design is responsible for designing the interior of the home.

In such types as the Georgian house and the London church, with which was of the Gothisism design, England fused time and place, exterior and interior architecture much was don on a wealthier scale under the Tudors (175). It was a unity France was unable to achieve. Moreover, in the England of the eighteenth century all former styles in the decorative arts merged and culminated in a demonstration of structural logic, formalism, and Barroque. This was no small achievement - one that has not yet been duplicated in our industrialized culture.

Many designers brought style over from England and made it more contemporary. John Hawks, described as "a very worthy master builder" (195), came from England to build a palace for the Governor Tryon at New Bern, a building that served both as the capitol of North Carolina and as the governors residence. In the North, Peter Harrison, also from England, planned such landmarks as the Redwood Library in Newport, Kings Chapel in Boston, Christ Church in Cambridge, and the Brick Market in Newport (196). Harrison designed these American buildings with a close eye on English architecture and design.

Mrs. Gamble was most informative about many aspects of interior design. Suprisingly, she explained that to enter the field of interior design doesn't necessarily mean one must go through many years of schooling. "I got my job organizing the library at Brooks Interior Design and moved into answering phones. Eventually my boss took me on a marketing trip (a trip to a big city to purchase furniture and accessories for the company) and before I knew it I was the assistant to the head designer," Gamble explained. She had no previous schooling or interior design experience and has only been with the company for three years. Yet, there is one major set back. She now only makes eight dollars an hour. "If your working for someone you'll make approximately fifte
