Kyoto Accord

It is widely accepted that the earth's climate is warming and that people are making a contribution to this warming. However, the magnitude of human's contribution and its long-term effect are not certain. It is not a secret that we need to secure a cleaner and safer environment for future generations. The big question is how should we go about achieving this goal?

The Kyoto Protocol has been proposed as a solution for the emission of greenhouse gases and is summarized as follows,

December 11, 1997: Representatives of 150 nations participated in the UN conference on anthropogenic climate change. The purpose of the conference was to reach an agreement on limiting global emission of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide from the combustion of fossil fuels, which may cause substantial climate warming with unpredictable but potentially devastating ecological and human consequences.

If the United States agreed to the terms of the protocol and signed on, it is very probable that we would experience harsh economic problems.

In order for the United States to accept these problems as unavoidable and necessary, the Kyoto Protocol would have to have undeniable proof of what exactly is causing global warming and

The bottom line is, if the United States is going to climb on board, the Kyoto Protocol must prove that long term goals will outweigh the short-term effects and that the protocol is the most effective way to achieve the desired goals.

Only industrialized countries are signing the Kyoto Protocol. Countries such as China, Mexico and Korea are not included, even though these countries will continue to increase their level of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

New Delhi Aug. 2, 2002. India is likely to ratify the controversial Kyoto protocol on reduction of greenhouse gases by October. This was indicated by P.V. Jayakrishnan, Secretary, Union Environment Ministry, today.

Brown determined that even using only the most economically efficient means, complying with Kyoto would reduce U.S. GDP by between 3 to 4.3 percent in 2010 - a loss of $275.2 billion to $394.4 billion.

Again we are left with uncertainties, is the earth warming or cooling and what ultimately is responsible.
