More often than not there are consequences for a person's actions. They may be goo

The consequences for things people do often do not only affect them, but others as well. In the case of Abelard and Heloise, they had a child born out of wedlock. Not only did that happen, but the poor little boy was abandoned. They left him in a different country with Abelard's sister instead of caring for him themselves. While the child was taken care of, he still had to deal with the fact that he was a child born out of wedlock and his mother did not want him. She left him and never again even mentioned him in her letters. There is no way a child cannot be affected when neither his mother nor his father love him. He will forever have to deal with that rejection and most likely rejection at the hands of society for being born out of wedlock.

". . .the more I was taken up with these pleasures, the less time I could give to

Abelard's teaching and the abandoned baby were not the only consequences to his and Heloise's affair. Abelard's own person was changed in a big way. Heloise's uncle, outraged at the shame he underwent because of his niece, decided to exact his own revenge on Abelard in the worst way he could think of. After bribing Abelard's servant, to let them enter his house, her uncle's servants ". . . cut off the parts of [his] body whereby [he] had committed the wrong for which they complained" (1232). Not only did Abelard feel the pain of his castration, but he was shamed and humiliated. In fact, he said the shame was felt more deeply than his physical pain. The irony of the whole situation is that now that they are allowed to have sex because they are married, they are no longer able to. None of this would have happened if he had either

d, as in the case of a man who helped the poor and was rewarded for his good deeds. Many times they are not so good and can even affect a person's entire life. A drunk driver may get in an accident and kill someone. As a result he is convicted of manslaughter and sent to prison. His life will never be the same - all because of one stupid decision. Abelard and Heloise also made a bad decision and they paid dearly for it the rest of their lives.
