This report focuses on security and privacy issues in regards to technology related to network and system security and privacy, including security policy, security frameworks, vulnerability assessment, firewalls, intrusion detection, virtual-private networks, authentication and authorisation, encryption standards, and public-key infrastructure. In the body of the report are details of samples of techniques and methods to ensure and enhance security and privacy.

The integrity of a two-factor authentication scheme is wholly dependent on users handling their tokens and PINs responsibly, however. This involves not losing the authentication token, changing the PIN periodically and notifying the appropriate people immediately if the token is missing. If a determined attacker gets a user's PIN and authentication token, that user is easily impersonated socially for example think of someone walking around with your PIN number and your ATM bank card.

Firewalls are also important since they can provide a single ``choke point'' where security and audit can be imposed. Unlike in a situation where a computer system is being attacked by someone dialing in with a modem, the firewall can act as an effective ``phone tap'' and tracing tool. Firewalls provide an important logging and auditing function; often they provide summaries to the administrator about what kinds and amount of traffic passed through it, how many attempts there were to break into it, etc.
