Mold

My topic was mold. Unlike mildew, mold grows when something gets old. Mold and mildew have some things in common: they can both grow on leather, and clothes but only mold can also grow on food too. I chose this topic because I wanted to see how long you could have food before it molds.

Penicillin and other substances are obtained from molds. A few molds are pathogenic. Some molds produce toxic chemicals called mycotoxins that can cause serious diseases. Mold consists of many cells that grow as branching threads called hyphae. Mold can be found wherever there is moisture, oxygen and a source of the few other chemicals they need. Some molds attach to grains such as wheat, oats, barley and corn. Hot spots of mold growth in the home include damp basements and closets, places where fresh food is stored, refrigerated drip trays, houseplants, air conditioners, humidifiers, garbage pails, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and old foam rubber pillows


I designed my experiment to test how long you could have certain foods before they start to mold. The materials that I used were: mashed potatoes, cheese, a strawberry, beef steak, a piece of bread, black electrical tape, a container, a pencil, a spiral (for my log), and a poster board (for my display). My controlled variable, was the time frame in which I would grow mold, and my manipulated variable was the different foods that I used for my experiment. Now I am going to tell you about my procedure. First of all I had to get a container and my foods ready which were: a strawberry, leftover mashed potatoes, cheese, a little piece of beef steak, and a piece of bread . Then after I got those out I put them into my container and put a piece of electrical tape on the lid so that you could not inhale the spores of the mold. After that I started a log in a red spiral journal for 21 days and reported if had started to grow mold on it yet or not. Then every d
