English Essay

Perhaps as a painting plays light against dark to create images, the words of an author in a work of fiction create tension that produces the vision that the writer wants us as readers to share with him. By sharing, in the vision of an author, we are invited to look at the human condition. It is because of the use of opposition that one can see all the shades of story. The contrast of one character with another or one situation with another gives the reader an overall view of both sides. Literature enables him to enter directly into

the affective processes of other human beings, and, having done this, the reader open his view of all things human. Through such an exercise of the sympathetic imagination, literature tends to draw on the essence that is carried in every human. The tension in fiction the light and the dark written side by side blend in middle, and it is in the middle that all human being are one. Opposition in literature enables the reader to understand the universality of human emotion.

Steinbeck creates tension with not only his charters in the short story Chrysanthemums but with the images he evokes. This is the story of an aging farmwife lonely and barren using her hands to

To me the function of literature is to give insight to the human condition. In Steinback's Chrysanthemum the opposition is best shown in the setting, while in Ibsen's A Doll's House the tension is carried along by the characters and in Ransom's Bell's for John Whiteside's Daughter the contradiction is represented through motion. It can be seen in all of these examples the opposed forces create a separate element. This element is the shared experience that unites humans. I think there is little new ground traversed by fiction but there are an infinite number of combinations to compare that bring to light all things human.

In the poem Bells for John Whiteside's Daughter the opposition is developed from the happy motion of a child played against the stillness of death. A child runs waving a stick through a group of white geese causing them to fly up. This what is remembered by the mourners who pass her corpse as it lies in state. In Ransom's poem the mourner's are astonished be the sight of her not in motion. All life is motion and as Ransom points out we are sternly stopped by death. This is;;;;;;;;;kkkkkk the universal emotion that is contemplated in the poem.
