Isis and Mary
Isis was the goddess of fertility according to Egyptian mythology, she represented motherhood. She was the daughter of god Keb (Earth) and his wife/ sister Nut (Sky). She was the sister-wife of Osiris. Osiris was the god who judged the dead as they prepared to leave into the afterlife. Isis and Osiris had a son by the name of Horus, who was god of day.The myth is about Osiris who was murdered by his brother and then sank his coffin containing his body. Isis went to search for his body and recovered it. But again he gained access to the body. He then cut the body into fourteen pieces which he scattered over the land. Isis searched for all of the pieces while mourning for her husband. She recovered each part of the body. Isis was believed to be powerful and have magic. She had the ability to create and destroy life with her words. After she found all fourteen pieces, she proceeded to bring Osiris back to life temporarily. She then creates Horus, their son during this period. There are festivals related to Isis. There were also daily prayers in the morning and the afternoon. In the autumn they celebrated their public festival of Search and Discovery where the remembered Isis' search of Osiris which ended
Isis is not only a loving mother, she was indwelling of nature. Her power controlled the winds and the seasons. She symbolized the light of the moon. with his discovery and resurrection. This was the most joyous occasion. Every culture has a female figure who represents and embodies the role of Motherhood. Mary was the daughter of well known parents. The circumstances of her conception are said to be miraculous although many do not consider her to be divine. Mary became with child of the Holy Ghost. When she had given birth to the Son of God she remained a virgin. Isis was a mythical deity who gave birth to a god, whereas the virgin Mary was human and gave birth to God. There is a heavy emphasis of the two on the mourning of their loved ones. For example, there are statues of Isis holding the dead Osiris across her knees which are very similar to the Pieta of the virgin Mary holding the dead Jesus across her lap. Both women are weeping and showing tremendous faith and devotion to both.
