A Poker Game

In the play, "Streetcar Named Desire" written by Tennessee Williams, The two main

characters interact symbolically. Throughout the play the actions of Stan and Blanch are

odvious, but when putting the simplicity of the actions and objects in context, the actions and

objects have very deep seated meaning. The author chooses to use symbolism to get the reader to

think deeper about the characters. Your interpretation of the symbolism, allows you to

internalize the story, and create your own thoughts.

The play feeds on the deception of the reader. From scene one the falsities of why Blanch was

visiting begins the deception. In order to understand how symbolism is used in the story, the

reader must understand each character. The character Blanche move's to New Orleans to live
