I believe that the US should continue to support a public policy that calls for the use of capital punishment. It is necessary for people to be punished for the crimes they commit. The concept of capital punishment is that the worst of criminals are put to death. I feel this is just what people need to deter violent crimes.
The design of capital punishment is good because it is a policy that fits the mala in se crimes. The thought behind the death sentence is an eye for an eye type of notion. In many cases, if criminals know that they can just go to jail for a crime, they won't think twice about it because it is better than their current situation. It all comes down to the old childhood statement that says 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you.' In less direct terms, this is an eye for an eye concept. I think that the general public agrees with this policy. According to Dr. Jeff Vaught in the book, Capital Punishment: The Public's View, he states that the general public of the US unites on many topics, but they absolutely do not come out in full force to oppose the death penalty. There have been many alliances and small political action committees that have tried to initiate legislation but have not been successful. If the majority of the US didn't believe in capital punishment, these interest groups wouldn't have any problem passing anti-capital punishment legislation.
