"I'm not the one with the problem, it's the world that seems to have the problem with me. People take one look at me... A big stupid ugly Ogre. They judge me before they even know me..." -Shrek. Everyday, millions of people are judged based on a simple first impression. Society is quick to pass judgements on people based on factors such as appearance, language, setting, and possessions. However, when the time is taken to get to know a person, it is proven more times than not, that the judgements taken are false. As expressed throughout the movie Shrek, sometimes things are not always as they appear. It is primarily through the characters in Shrek that this theme is expressed. At home in his swamp, a flatulent ogre named Shrek defends his life of solitude, though deep down it's probably not his first choice. Due to the fact that he is a strikingly ugly ogre, he is automatically assumed to be evil and cruel, therefore labeled an outcast to society. Shrek exploits that misconception in order to protect his privacy.. An example being when he was confronted by torch bearing, pitchfork wielding villagers. He describes the gruesome fates awaiting those who disturb him, in hopes of the villagers never retu
of ideal appearance, but in reality whether ugly or beautiful, both can hold kind inner beings. Secret within a person can be very deceiving, as shown with Princess Fiona. However, identity deception doesn't always have to do with personality. Many times society judges people based on the setting, or possessions. Lord Farquaad is ruler over the kingdom of Duloc, a town that very closely resembles an amusement park. He views this land the most perfect town to ever exist. Perfect law, perfect people, and most important, perfect ruler. However, there is one minor problem; Lord Farquaad is not truly a king. He owns a castle, he makes the rules, and he acts as a ruler to all without actually being a ruler himself. In the beginning of the movie, Lord Farquaad is seen as a tough powerful king as he walks towards the room where the gingerbread man is being tortured. The assumption is made that he is a king, because moments before images of his castle were shown. We assume that only kings live in castles and therefore he must be one. We are quick to see a change in the angle of the camera to reveal a short, shinny man. Automatically we assume that something is not right about this king. Later in the movie when Shrek arrives to Duloc, he takes a look at Lord Farquaad's enormous castle and quickly comments that Lord Farq
