The Effects of Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research will have a great effect on the economy and the science world. When describing what stem cells are it can be quite difficult to explain, so I have quoted The National Institutes of Heath:

?Stem cells are cells that have the ability to divide for indefinite periods in culture and to give rise to specialized cells. They are best described in the context of normal human development. Human development begins when a sperm fertilizes an egg and creates a single cell that has the potential to form an entire organism.?

(NIH net). Stem cell research does have many promising aspects to it. In this paper, I will explain the economical aspects of stem cell research and the scientific aspects of stem cell research.

One of the aspects that stem cell research could promise is curing many different life-treating diseases. These diseases are the main cause of deaths in the United States. If these disease were eradicated the economy would stimulate dramatically. It is estimated that by curing cancer and eliminating the deaths cause by cancer would generate an economical value worth 47 trillion dollars (Klatz net). Being that cancer is one of the leading causes of death in America, a cure for cancer would save m

Another benefit of stem cell research is the scientific aspect, such as creating new organs. This is very beneficial because there are so many organ shortages in the United States. Using new technologies from stem cell research can prevent organ shortages. Making new organs from stem cells means lives are being saved. By creating a new heart from a stem cell means an exact match, which is the greatest problem in transplant surgery. When using stem cells the DNA matches the organ. So they are making an exact copy of an organ. DNA matching is the main cause of organ shortages

In humans, this is called pluripotency, but can be lost at the end of second week after fertilization. There is still not much known about this practice (Trefil net).

Stem cell research will effect the economy and the social world greatly in the future. In conclusion, stem cell research does have a promising future, and it has the potential to help cure many of the world?s life-threatening diseases.

The federal government has laws that prohibit funding of stem cell research. There are also laws that prohibit the creating of human embryos to make new stem cells for researching. Another law states that the only way researchers can use stem cells for their research is if they have fetuses donated to them from abortions (McConchie net).

?The notion of living past 120 is now commonly embraced by even the most conservative of scientists and scientific institutions? (Klatz net). Longevity comes to mind when one thinks of curing most diseases. When people start to live longer it effects the social world and the economical world. Due to the fact that people are living longer, the net increase in the 65+ population in the United States in 1998 was 145,000, aver
