One of the many articles in the "Green Guerillas" book is titled 'Oil, lawlessness and indigenous struggles in Ecuador's Oriente', by Judith Kimerling. This article consists of two main parts, one on the oil giant, Texaco and its impact on Ecuadorean Amazon and the other part on the struggles and resistance of the indigenous population.

I will analyze the second part. I will focus on discussing particular challenges related to structural changes and global demands, , and then I will discuss the main players of this situation, how they react and how they defend their interests.

As the article notes, the Indigenous people make up about 40 % of the total Ecuador population. Nevertheless, the government treats them worse than nothing. It looks like the situation has not changed much from early colonization when it comes to the treatment of the natives. They suffer racism, discrimination and risk of cultural assimilation. One might ask why these people do not take advantage of a more developed society and adapt what is good for them? Well, it is not that simple. Starting with colonizations, the natives have only seen trouble coming from the so called "developed societies". These "white" people have brought disease and d

estruction, followed by death. And these "wonderful gifts" keep coming all the time. It is not a simple situation. The cultural gap is enormous, and the fact that the Indigenous population leaves far from modernized centers of big cities just widens this gap even more. This creates a cultural challenge which results in inability of the two cultures to create a relationship. In the eyes of the Ecuadorian government these natives are just in their way and should be driven out of that precious land, the land that will pay off the enormous national debt. The Indigenous people can do little or nothing to stop the destruction of their land. They slowly become aware of what's happening and finally try to organize and protect what's left of the environment, creating thus another challenge, that of organized resistance against injustice.

Indigenous people fight for their own land, trying to protect their local environment, which in turn is part of our global environment and our global resources. Right now the problem is or at least seems smaller in size - Indigenous people trying to survive and protect the highly polluted environment. It's all far from the developed nations, where it does not directly affect these nations, and easy to be ignored. Although the challenges still seem local, they will soon be global

Once I read something that surprised me: If all the people on earth were to live and spend like those in the United States, we would need 5 earths to survive. Isn't this amazing? This is how inconsiderate and ungrateful humans can get, and how they don't realize or they don't want to realize that Mother Earth cannot only give forever, it needs care and fair treatment, too. Here we face a global environmental challenge. How many of us do not laugh at the people on the news who demonstrate "Save the trees" ? How many of us recycle? How many of us will make the choice to buy a compact car and save some gas, instead of getting that big SUV? These questions would not get any big numbers for answer. In this age of new discoveries, of opportunities for great education we are so pitifully ignorant when it comes to our environment. I believe it is about time that Environmental awareness be increased and these problems become part of the school curriculum. .

To conclude my thoughts, I should say that there are no words to describe the damages we are doing to our environment. There is about time we all accept our mistakes, and try to do something to make up for them. If we take care of nature, nature is going to take care of us. As uto
