"The Conservative Presidents of the 1920's"

The 1920's opened with the election of a new president and would open a new chapter in United States History. Conservative Republicans would rule politics during the 1920's. Conservatism can be defined as being uneasy with change and the idea that government could be blamed for much of the problems. Conservative politics looked down on involvement of government in the business world. Three successive conservative Republicans would be elected to presidency and would create soaring business and put farmers and unions through a time of depression. Warren Harding was the first of three presidents to be elected. After his death, Calvin Coolidge would take over presidency. When Coolidge declined to run for a second term, Hoover won election in 1928. During the twenties the economy was stressed rather than politics. The nation saw a small slump post civil war that was followed by a boom in business which ended in 1929 when the stock market crashed and depression came.

Warren Harding was the first of the conservatives to be elected in 1921. Harding was very popular among the Republicans and has been a newspaper publisher in Ohio before his political career began. Harding did not h


Being Harding's vice president, Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as president after Harding's death. Harding was a past governor of Massachusetts. Coolidge is most notably remembered for his statement "The business of America is business." Coolidge won election over Davis in 1924. Coolidge stressed budget crunching during his reign. He did not spend money unless it was absolutely necessary. He was intent on leaving business to conduct itself with little guiding from the government. Coolidge stressed wealth for it was the means of everything that was desirable. When Coolidge's term was up in 1928 he declined to run again. Hoover would now take his run at President of the United States.

The era of the 1920's was characterized by a threesome of conservative Republicans leading the country. While economic prosperity was brought at one time, the beginning of depression was also brought. Conservative Republicans had proved that they could make their system of letting business happen naturally with little government guidance work in the United States.
