Serve and volley is a lost art in the tennis world. It is virtually impossible to see more than a handful of players use this style of play. However, it is considered to be the most effective and strategic way to play the game. If this is true, why don't we see more players serve and volley?
To begin with, in order to be a true player of serve and volley it requires several skills that are very difficult to master. Obviously, by just the name of serve and volley it is assumed that the player would have to do both well. Almost all the players on the tour have big serves and great volleying skills. However, a large portion of them can only volley well at the net. They lack the skills it requires to take a volley at mid court before they can reach the net a
Once you have acquired these necessary and vital skills of the game, you have to learn how to use them effectively. You have to hit a well placed serve, come in and make a good first volley in order to set yourself up to end the point on the next volley. By doing this you will be able to end points quickly and conserve your energy. However, if your touch and precision aren't that great, than you will be in store for a lot of running and hard work just to win a single point. The amounts of running, diving, twisting, and stretching of the body really has an affect on the body and it takes its toll over time. Thus, many players who don't take care of their body effectively have to retire early due to injuries they have incurred over the years.
