Childhood is one of the greatest times of our lives, just as Holden believes. Taking that road towards adolescence is a huge step in one's life. However, determining an exact time in which this jump is made is impossible since this process is a series of steps that lead you from one state to the other. For instance, one by one I lose my childish tendencies and as I lost each one, I became that much more mature, and that much closer to becoming a young man. Then, there was the first step into Lawrence, and the first walk down the hall of Falmouth High School, both of these occurrences made me think deeper into the fact that I wasn't exactly a little kid anymore. Finally, one of the most recent happenings that diminished the youngster within was the achievement of receiving my license. Put these all together and it seems to be clear that "child" isn't exactly the best word to describe me because of the lack of childish inclinations and the new experiences that prove to be the stepping stones towards developing into a man.

As you progress through life and enter new schools, there is always that feeling of a jump towards adulthood, but no schools have quite the effect that Junior High and High School have. I remember the first day I stepped into Lawrence Junior High School, and I felt several years older and certainly didn't realize that the reality was that I was merely a day older. I thought about how when I had seen my brother and sister pass through the schools, and then I considered how I had looked up to them as being OLD when they were in Lawrence. This feeling would definitely stick with me for the following two years as I deemed myself as a teenager, and one who has lost that purity, and that innocence that bonds to childhood. These couple of years would only be followed by yet another large jump. I would then go to the High School, I would become part of a class, I would be graduating here, I would be making decisions for colleges, and most of all, this would be the place where I become a genuine adult. This was one small step for a freshman, but one giant leap for escaping my formative years. Just being amongst such a multitude of older and more mature people made me feel less like a child, yet experiencing the new atmosphere and the increase in respect (more from the teachers that the upper classmen) all pointed out that I truly wasn't that same disrespected, know-nothing baby that I once was. Both examples of drastic changes in my life represent a huge bound in which my life was morphing, from a small kid to a mature grown-up.
