Thesis: Parental love are important theme in the Bridge of San Luis Rey. We see this theme in the stories of Doña Maria, Madre Maria del Pilar, and Uncle Pio.

The Bridge of San Luis Rey begins by telling us how in Friday at noon on July 20th of 1714 "The finest bridge in Peru broke and precipitated five travelers into the gulf" (Wilder pp 5) Brother Juniper, a monk who saw the accident and began an investigation into the lives of the five travelers. This took six years investigating their secrets lives. Also Brother Juniper wanted to know if this incident was provoked or where for destiny of god. In this book the author mentions about how important is love. In this book I found three parental loves between Maria the Marqueza, Madre Maria del Pilar and Uncle Pio.

The firs parental love is between the Marqueza and her daughter Doña Clara. Doña Maria the Marqueza was a daughter of a cloth merchant. She was not happy when she was little also she was ugly and she stuttered, her mother persecuted her with sarcasms. She got marry

The second parental love is between Madre Maria del Pilar to Esteban and Manuel. Manuel and Esteban were twin brothers which were abandoned in the door of the convent of Santa Maria Rosa de las Rosas, where the Abbes Madre Maria del Pilar took care of them. In the beginning the Abbes doesn't like any men at all, but by the time she felt affection and love for them. After few years they have to leave the convent because they completed the properly aged to work outside. After few years Manuel hurt his knee with a piece of metal. His brother Esteban made the possible to save his life, but it was impossible and he died after three days. In this book the author when Madre Maria del Pilar learned about. That one of the twins died she exclaiming angrily "I have prayed for wisdom and you give me none. You have chosen to give the last grace" (Wilder pp 64) after happen this the captain Alvarado offered to Esteban accepted, but they never traveled together, because Esteban was one of the travelers who across the bridge of San Luis and it felt into the gulf.
