Abortion

A detailed Summary of Abortion

The issue of abortion and its' morality is no doubt one of great controversy. Is there any morally defensible point in a pregnancy where abortion is wrong afterwards but permissible before? In this paper I will argue that, yes, abortion is permissible but only to a certain extent.

First we shall lay out the reasons why abortion is a needed procedure. Most prominently, accidents do happen. People become unintentionally pregnant at times when they may not be prepared to take care of a life or emotionally stable enough to give up their own child and have that child raised by a foreign family. Consider the physical imposition and burden of bearing a child; the morning sickness, the stress, the need for a complete change of lifestyle. After the nine months is up, the mother must then go through the immense pain of delivery (the issue of pain and morality will be discussed in further detail later on). Surely no one would consider it moral to force someone into parenting. It is neither morally right on the parents behalf nor the child's if you look at the welfare perspective.

So, from the aforementioned arguments thus far, banning abortion completely would be an immoral action in it of itself. I do however recognize the need for a li

I shall impose one more limitation upon abortions. With few exceptions should anyone have more than two abortions in their life-time. Recognizing the impossibility of enforcing such a limit, this serves more as a moral preaching rather than a desire for legal action. Given the presence of a slight wrongness in abortion, it simply is impermissible to have countless numbers of abortions; doing so just digs deeper and deeper into immorality. All extenuating circumstances aside, there is little reason for anyone to ever even need more than two abortions. Any woman terminating a pregnancy more frequently than that is irresponsible and perhaps immoral herself. A woman should not just go around killing repeatedly simply because she does not want to be a parent.

Keeping with the effort to carry out abortions in the most moral of ways, an anesthetic of some form should be provided to any fetus developed enough to do so. The nervous system begins developing in the first month when the fetus is less than one-half inch. While it is very difficult for scientists and medical professionals to prove exactly when a fetus is developed enough to feel or sense pain, most would agree that there is little chance of pain perception at this stage. Most would also agree than pain is not conceptualized at this point because the fetus has not reached sentience. I would argue though that the pain is still "there," although not conceptualized, and it certainly can not hurt to take precautions. Once an abortion is decided upon, pain management should be employed to err on the side of safety. This would eliminate all chances of immorality based on the pain factor of the fetus.

In limiting abortion numbers for women, it is hoped that women will be deterred from using it as a method of birth control. This limitation recognizes the need for a certain extent of grace and is more tha
