Action speaks for itself. The world is created by the incidents of cause and effect performed by the people. Therefore, a suicide is the final action of an attempt to live a life. First of all, I consider a suicide to be an immoral act upon oneself despite any convincing excuses. I also consider it to be a failure because to kill oneself means to renounce any outcome of the future's holdings. Edwin Arlington Robinson portrays a character of a representative failure in his poem, ?I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Richard Cory.?SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Cory is a wealthy man greatly envied and admired by his townspeople. He commits suicide because he is unable to crawl out of his inner poverty. The first time I read this poem, I thought to myself what a pathetic fellow he is, because he is unable to find the answer to his life's worth except death. But after a few closer reading, I realized that this is not the case at all. In fact, Cory is a foolish and a shallow-minded man who cannot appreciate his position that so many people only dream of. He is too indulged in his selfhood that he refuses to seek for life's improvement. Eventually this ignorance towards his life's worth leads to the suicide.

The people on the pavement are certainly in a lower class than Cory. Cory's social standing in his town is as high as it can be. He seems to be the perfect, polite gentleman, as he is "always human when he talked.?SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He is an impressive social figure indeed, seen from the townspeople's eye. They envy his high status in the society and wish to be in his place. But being in a poor financial situation does not always mean they are poor at heart. Things aren't always they seem. The thirteenth and the fourteenth stanzas in the poem cast a biblical meaning supporting this belief. The lower class townspeople's hope for a better life is illustrated when they wait for the light even when they are hungry in their stomachs. They keep on living their lives to save themselves from the darkness because they believe in the light. The meat and bread Cory is abundant of, symbolize materialism whereas the light the townspeople wait for symbolize spiritualism. Man does not live by the bread alone. It is the light that gives meaning. Cory did not realize this, so he lived only on the materialistic level thus leading to his meaningless life. A person's wealth does not give him superiority
