They envy his high status in the society and wish to be in his place. But being in a poor financial situation does not always mean they are poor at heart. Things aren't always they seem. The lower class townspeople's hope for a better life is illustrated when they wait for the light even when they are hungry in their stomachs. They keep on living their lives to save themselves from the darkness because they believe in the light. The meat and bread Cory is abundant of, symbolize materialism whereas the light the townspeople wait for symbolize spiritualism. Man does not live by the bread alone. It is the light that gives meaning. Cory did not realize this, so he lived only on the materialistic level thus leading to his meaningless life. A person's wealth does not give him superiority
