I moved to the U.S. with my mother without any prior knowledge of American culture when I was in the ninth grade. My first language is Chinese, and I had much difficulties acclimating to my new environment at first. I didn't have any friends in school and felt like an outsider in a school that was mostly white. Some students ridiculed my English and classes were intimidating. However, once the initial culture shock wore off, I caught on very fast. I started to volunteer for answers in class. I attended many school activities and made many friends.

From my experiences, I have learned so much. I have learned to compete in the real world. I have learned how to deal with people. And I now have the self-confidence that if I try very hard, I can achieve anything I put my mind to it. For example, I lost 30 pounds in six weeks last year after starting a healthy diet and exercise regimen. I know I still have much to learn. I need a good education so I can take my business to the next level. And I am very motivated.
