Globalization

I'm focusing my essay on one of the most criticism issues of globalization, about who is really gaining from global integration, or in other words, who is benefiting from globalization. It is not a question that has a right answer of course, if not, it is a controversy, since there are opinions in both sides, and I just want to mention them so that we all get a better understanding of it. I have research information in statistics about some developing countries from the World Bank, IMF,... web pages, and then contrasted with some articles I have found also in web pages and an article in the magazine ''Times'' from a week after the September eleventh. The reason I write about this is because criticisms are important, since they inform public opinion and the decisions of policy-makers around the world.

First of all, it would be good to define ''globalization'', since I have found different meanings of it, and the one I want to refer to is the one of economic integration around the world, so that we can analyze the return that globalization has in different countries and inside a one society in itself, the discrepancies there are.

Coming back to the question of who is gaining from globalization, there are the two sides, the o

What is true in fact is that many of the poorer countries are not trading with foreign countries, nor investing, so globalization can not be blame for their evolution, but even globalization it is not responsible for some countries to be worst off, it is still a issue in the world that has to be solve. It can be true in some sense that poor locations integrating with the world has enabled them to improve their lives, but there are many ways in which rich countries make it difficult for poor countries to integrate, in aspects such as protectionism of rich countries against poor ones, making it hard for poor to export their products, or poor countries not receiving aids from rich countries, which would enable them to operate more efficient, such as improving roads, ports, and making it easier to access the world market.

The ones who think that poor are gaining from globalization, would say that in the past 20 years the growth rate has been higher in developing countries than the rich ones. And that many of the poor countries that are opening themselves to more trade and foreign investment (globalization) are better off, such as China, Vietnam, Uganda or India. These large poor countries have grown rapidly in the past 15 years due to their opening to foreign trade and investments, but there are a lot of small poor countries which have done pretty badly in the past years. China, Vietnam and India are one third of total developing countries, and they are the top three in terms of increased trade to GDP over the past decades. But what is really surprising is that the rest of poor countries developing have not move favorable, its growth has maintain to zero and they trade less today than 20 years ago. So, World Bank or IMF would say that countries that have been trading much more are the same ones as getting more foreign direct investment, and that is what globalization is about.

Even though China is a good example of the success of globalization, it can be argued that its success has been because Chinese currency is not convertible, and because Chinese government has not follow the advise of the IMF and therefore they have used their own policies even it is true that the have opened more than 10 years ago. India is another case of success of globalization, but they also didn't follow IMF's advises, and India government has extensive controls over currency conversion and capital controls. Vietnam, also another succeed story, it is good to know that even they got better off, it may been caused, a part from globalization, for the 60% of their investment is done by their government. With this examples of success in those countries, you see the economies that were able to take advantage of some opening and access to fore
