Ozone depletion, greenhouse effect, acid rain

Everyone knows that the atmosphere and the pollution in the world is very dangerous to everything and everyone. But how bad are these different things that affect us and everything around us? This paper will specifically look at the effects, global effect and the treatment on acid rain, the greenhouse effect and the ozone depletion.

Acid rain has been around for a long time. It was first noticed around the 17 century during the industrialization period. Scientists have been paying attention to "acid rain" since that time and the effects it has had on the plants, animals, humans etc. Acid rain is very dangerous as most people know. First off the term is not totally correct and scientists prefer the terminology acid depositions. The reason these scientists believe that it is called acid depositions instead of acid rain is simply because the acid which was formed by pollution can in fact return to the earth as either solid or a gas and not only in the form of rain. Acid depositions can come in rain, fog or even snow. Industries, factories, vehicles, aerosol cans, etc are all causes for "acid rain". This is because all of these things increase the level of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen in the air we breathe in. Th

Two billion years ago, Earth only had a few micro-organisms which lived underwater. Thru the aid of photosynthesis, oxygen was released into the atmosphere which reached the stratosphere which reacted with the UV rays coming from the sun to form the ozone. Over a long period of time an ozone layer was formed and since it protected the UV rays to go thru, creation of species was born. Ozone is a gas that is found in the atmosphere but is mostly concentrated in the stratosphere between 10 and 50 km above the sea level which is also called the ozone layer. The ozone layer, however, is necessary for life on planet Earth. This ozone layer protects the habitants of Earth to be protected from ultra violet rays from the sun. It has been discovered recently that the ozone is becoming a lot thicker and holes are getting created which affects human's health greatly. It causes skin cancer, causes damager to surface of plants and animals, can lead to eye diseases. Atmospheric ozone is constantly breaking down and then getting repairing what it broke down; all of these activities was in a natural stage but has been interrupted by human activity. A lot of this is because of CFC, aerosol cans, refrigeration, foam insulation are now rising to the stratosphere affecting the ozone layer. Since so many chemicals are being released into the stratosphere a lot of chemical reactions occur and destroy a large amount of the ozone layer. This interrupts the normal breaking down/repairing of the ozone layer. Now, because of human activity, more of the ozone layer is breaking down and not repairing as quickly. Recent studies have shown that a lot of ozone layer holes have been created over Antarctica which is the reason for the climatic conditions over there which is more susceptible to the ozone depletion.

The ozone layer depletion affects human health, marine environment, agriculture and plant life, and material degradation. The greatest risk of the ozone depleting is that the risk of skin cancer will augment. A lot more eye diseases will occur such as cataracts. The UV rays will affect the small insects and animals in the water which can cause them to die. More importantly it could cause a big reduction in the food chain for fish, marine animals and seabirds. Crops will suffer because of the UV rays that will expose the plants and the crops. It will strop them from growing and reproducing as well. It will also make them more sensitive to diseases

What does the Ozone depletion affect?

Global warming happens in our world today. The Earth today is heated by the sun which is our major source of energy. It translates into this: the solar radiation caused by the sun's heat goes thru the atmosphere and it is finally absorbed by the Earth's surface which makes it warm for humans to live on. However, this heat is lost very rapidly. It is emitted from the surface as what is called infra-red radiation. The good thing about this is that this infra-red radiation cannot escape as quickly as the solar radiation (caused by the sun) can. Most of the radiation is trapped by a number of gasses. It is called the "Greenhouse effect" because of the similarities between the warmth of the planet and the effects of glass in a greenhouse. It is similar because the heat in a greenhouse cannot escape. The major issue with the greenhouse effect is that human activities are causing global warming. The concentrations of the greenhouse gasses are increasing daily which means that more of the infra-red radiation is being trapped in instead of being released. Since this is happening more heat is trapped inside which is why it is called Global warming. The gasses that are causing the global warming are as follows: vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, CFCs, and ozone. Some of these chemicals are due to no human fault at all and some are due because of humans. No matter who or what is the reason for these gasses they all have the same effect on our atmosphere.
